The Customs Broker License Exam is the exam U.S. Customs and Border Protection uses before licensing a customs broker (19 CFR 111.13). It has 80 multiple-choice questions with four options, 4 hours 30 min, open book on the HTSUS and 19 CFR, and you need 75% (CBP, as at 12 Oct 2026).
CBP reported 22% for April 2026, 12% for October 2025, 30% for April 2025, before appeals. Most candidates fail, usually on time and precision rather than effort.
The released exams are. CBP publishes each exam and its answer key after the sitting; as US government works they are public domain, and we present them unchanged as "Official CBP exam (Month Year)" with our own worked explanations. Every other question is original, written from 19 CFR, the HTSUS and CBP guidance.
Mostly, but not always. Each released exam tests the reference editions printed on it. Our explanations check every answer against today's 19 CFR and the 2026 HTSUS and flag where a later change matters.
Broker Compliance (about 18), Practical Exercise (about 7), Special Topic (Drawback or Quota) (about 5), Classification (about 10), Entry / Entry Summary (about 25), Valuation, Appraisement and Duty Assessment (about 15). Our full practice exams use the same categories in the same order.
